Contacting your insurance company: when and how

Feel free to contact your insurance company anytime, but especially in the following cases:

Pre-certification - Insurance companies ask that members call ahead before a hospital stay or surgery. This is so the carrier can help make sure you are getting the right care at the best price.

Billing concerns - Always contact your insurance company if:

  • You question whether you were billed correctly.

  • You are unsure of the type of care you received.

  • You don’t understand your Explanation of Benefits, or EOB, which lists how much of the bill your insurance company will pay on your behalf, and how much you still owe.

Benefits information - Benefits, limitations and maximums of your health insurance plan are detailed in a Summary Plan Description, or SPD. Call you carrier if you have questions about or need a copy of your SPD. If you are still missing information or don’t understand what your carrier is telling you, contact your employer’s Human Resources department.
